Collective 2013 Retrospective
January 2013 Writers Workshop
Our recent "PITCH TO PUBLISHER" workshop session with David Hoffman / Creative Director at Shapiro, Bernstein & Co., Inc. included a film crew taping a documentary on songwriting today! Now that is going to be some dramatic viewing!!! David shared recent pitch opportunities and the workshop split into two groups with each jointly composing a song for presentation. Each workshop member then held a "meeting" with David presenting themselves and their songs. Valuable skills that every songwriter/artist needs!
SPRING WRITERS WORKSHOP / Dates to be announced next week!
This workshop will be geared towards the singer / songwriter. The workshop will focus on developing the special unique song and sound to become a signature independent artist! Expect special guests as always!!! Our weekly Tuesday evening workshop sessions held in a recording studio are unique in that our writers interact with industry hitmakers. Writing skills are strengthened along with conveying an understanding of the songwriting market and music industry today.

SUMMER CAMP WORKSHOP ROARS with SMORES!
Our final Summer Camp Workshop session began with our listening to Katy Perry's first single ROAR. We analyzed the song/production and then the workshop was split into two teams. YES - Color War!
The objective was for each group to write the follow-up "second single" for Katy's record. Each group had an hour to accomplish the task! The last half hour was devoted to all listening to the song start of each team. Two completely different songs - both strong and worthy of finishing. It was a tie! We celebrated with some fresh made "S'Mores"! Songwriting can be a sticky mess sometimes but oh so sweet!
The Collective Fall workshop begins September 17th - if you would like more info - send an email with FALL WORKSHOP in the title to: newyorksongwriterscollective@gmail.com

VISITING DAY AT SONGWRITERS SUMMER CAMP!
Tuesday evening the camp welcomed Amanda Schupf / Imagem Music A & R director. She explained the role of the music publisher and her daily activities in working with songwriters. Everyone had a chance to introduce themselves and play a song for critique as if they were having a private meeting with a publisher. Good practice!!!!
We had our first guest counselor (at law) Daniel Novick visit this past Tuesday and he gave a powerpoint presentation all about the business of music and how money is made and where it goes! I think you need to send a CARE package NOW!!!! LOL I'll write you a song and soundcloud it to you!
